Golden Discs is a media retailer based, and trading in, Ireland. Its main competitors are HMV and previously Zavvi, however, Zavvi is no longer trading. Its outlets, however, are significantly smaller than those of HMV. It would also be reasonable to count Tesco as a competitor due to their value for items in the chart, however Tesco does not specialize in the same items as Golden Discs/HMV and does not have sales or other similar promotions on these items. It currently sells CDs, DVDs and PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Wii and Xbox 360 games. It also stocks some gaming consoles and digital music players & accessories. The company formerly stocked VHS but this was phased out. Music can also be purchased through the Golden Discs Digital website.

Golden Discs entered examinership in February 2009 following a High Court order sought by Sony, a major creditor. [1] A loss of 1.6m Euros was reported by the directors in April 2010, together with concerns about trading conditions.[2]
